TransforMed at the European Agroforestry Conference EURAF 2026

A look back at the 8th EURAF Conference, the European Agroforestry Federation's flagship event bringing together researchers, farmers and policymakers to advance sustainable land use. A number of TransforMed members participated in this event and presented the activities currently underway, as well as the results achieved.

Only a few weeks have passed since the closing of EURAF 2026 in Neuchâtel. Many of us were there to represent the TransforMed project from various perspectives. When we registered, we had our doubts about the relevance of presenting a project on agroforestry in arid environments at a European agroforestry congress. Yet this extremely hot summer in Europe made us realise, once again, that heatwaves and water scarcity are no longer challenges exclusive to the southern Mediterranean.

While the challenges are certainly great to overcome, the week taught us that diverse realities and innovative solutions exist and circulate, and that agroforestry plays a fundamental role in safeguarding socio-ecosystems and mitigating climate change, regardless of climatic context. We feel a responsibility to share what we have learnt and put these practices into action.

The task now is to draw on the data, experience and successful demonstrations gathered, and to implement large-scale land management that incorporates trees and other woody species into our agricultural and urban environments.

The lessons learnt over the past week are motivating us to continue along our project's path. As part of the TransforMed project, we are now entering a phase of reflection and planning on how to capitalise on and put the project's results to use. We will soon be producing new technical content to share with farmers, and are also working on drafting the key messages and specific lessons we wish to convey to the private sector and political representatives, with a view to scaling up the project's activities.

We are grateful to the participants of EURAF 2026 for inspiring us, supporting us, and instilling in us the enthusiasm we will carry into the next stages of the project.
