Agroforestry platforms in Morocco: inter-institutional hubs and experimental sites for sustainable environmental management

During the International Congress on the Argan Tree, Mr. Ahmed El Bouari, Minister of Agriculture (MAPDEF), conducted an official field visit to the experimental agroforestry platform in Essaouira.

The project team presented the Laasaba platform, designed to promote diversified agroforestry systems incorporating argan trees and complementary species such as caper, cactus and atriplex. Particular attention was paid to the innovative practices adopted to improve the success of plantations under conditions of water scarcity. In this regard, the use of Waterboxes was highlighted as a key measure for improving the survival of young plants during the establishment phase, by ensuring more efficient water management and reducing irrigation requirements.

This event provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the platform's multifaceted objectives: to serve as a demonstration site for experimental land and resource management techniques, as a laboratory for the technical evaluation of agroforestry systems, and as a training centre promoting the sharing of best practices.

The Minister's visit also served to reaffirm the traditional link between argan cultivation and diversified land-use systems. This represents a valuable pathway to improving rural livelihoods whilst contributing to soil restoration.

This event sends a clear message: the lessons learnt and collaborations must extend beyond institutional frameworks to lead to fruitful partnerships and jointly developed strategies for sustainable environmental management.
